Spring Has Sprung!
With the arrival of daffodils, crocus and pussy willows, we know that spring is here at Barkwells! In just a few days/weeks our tulips will burst into color, and, best of all, the spring clean of our final cabin will be complete! We welcome the season officially on Easter weekend, which will be our first full house of 2016.
Last year we added the dual electronic gate system as our major project. This year a redesign of the office entry and Libby cabin yard is being completed. A terraced garden is being created in front of the office for our gardener Courtney to fill with fresh cut flowers, vegetables and herbs for guests (and sometimes goats) to enjoy. Those who have stayed in Libby’s cabin will be delighted that we are expanding the fenced yard as much as possible and adding terraces to soften the slope for easier access into the yard. We continue our commitment to honoring the biodiversity of WNC with our grounds projects. If you visited last summer you may have noticed our milkweed (Asclepias tuberose) garden near the wellhouse. Milkweed is essential to the survival of monarch butterflies as they lay their eggs on the leaves and the caterpillars dine only on milkweed. Much of the population of milkweed (once a robust native species) has been lost to pesticide spraying. Our small garden was bustling with monarch pupa and caterpillars, so we will expand our garden this season and add more species of flowers attractive to pollinators.
We have completed most of our cabin projects over the winter, including refinishing floors in Lacey and Peppermint Patty, re-sealing the exterior of Peppermint Patty and Libby and pressure washing cabins. There are exciting projects still in the works and we will keep you posted on our progress. We hope to see you this year and look forward to hearing how you like our improvements!
