Information about Dog Flu

Dear friends,

The canine influenza virus is causing concern for our four-legged friends.  Barkwells has not had any incidences of the canine flu and is maintaining our usual fastidious standards of cleanliness for people and dogs. Our low density and private yards enable our guests to monitor any dog interaction.

In the interest of clear communication and information, we have reached out to two local vets, Dr. Sarah Brown with Health Care for Pets, who provided information that has been disseminated by the AKC, and Dr. Laurel Davis of Sunvet Wellness Center. There is a vaccine available, but as always, we recommend you consult your own vet to make fully-informed decisions.

Dr. Laurel explained to us that it is very similar to kids and their flu season. When they all congregate, the virus spreads. We all have to be very careful about taking our dogs out where other dogs go; to  parks, kennels, dog parks; heavy traffic walking areas, vet hospitals. This virus is just like the human flu virus in that it will hit the young, old and immuno-compromised dogs harder than others.

We appreciate your consideration of others when visiting  Barkwells at any time,  and in particular your cooperation in our efforts to  ensure your dogs’ health and well-being while they are here at Barkwells. Please contact us if you have any questions or need further information.
