We’re more than dog-friendly. Barkwells is an unique, dog-centric place to run, swim, and play with your four-legged friends. Exceptional, fully furnished and equipped vacation home accommodations in a low density, gated community create a haven for like-minded dog lovers. Come for a getaway: the mountains and the high-speed internet are both there for however you choose to connect; and your private hot tub and fireplace will be waiting for you to wrap up a day well spent. You’ll find freedom and fun in a safe environment on acres of fenced meadows with a pond.
With only 8 cabins on more than 8 acres in Mills River, or 2 cottages on 6 acres near Brevard, you’ll experience privacy, security, and a more than 15 year history of meticulous housekeeping standards.
Relax with your two- and four-legged family, secure in the knowledge that everything is here for you to safely vacation with your dogs far away from every day, yet close to all the fun.
Cabins or Cottages?
ASHEVILLE AREA VACATION CABINS
Sit on your gated front porch or chuck the ball as far as you can across acres of meadows.
Just five minutes from shopping, dining, and the Sierra Nevada brewery, our Mills River location features 8 cozy, comfy, and fully equipped cabins with private yards and hot tubs.
It’s the perfect place to relax and have fun with your best friends!
In true Barkwells style, this property has all the amenities of the original Mills River property: fenced perimeter, electronic gates, meadows for running, and ponds for swimming. Just 15 minutes from Dupont State Forest, Pisgah National Forest, and downtown Brevard, enjoy one of our two luxurious cottages that offer you expansive meadow and mountain views, a private hot tub, a fenced yard with a dog door, and the relaxing sound of water falling into the ponds outside your doorstep.
The extra added attraction here is miniature donkeys! (Fully fenced, of course.)
“Perhaps one of the best places on the planet to take your four-legged companion is outside of Asheville, where the all-cottage resort Barkwells was built with dogs in mind. Your pup can roam freely from his own door in each of the property’s eight one- and two-bedroom cabins, which have gated porches and fenced-in yards. Acres of grass, a pond stocked with fish, and farm animals like chickens and goats, will keep him (and all of his new friends) entertained for days.” Travel & Leisure
“Asheville is an Appalachian city, not too big and with a progressive and welcoming feel. Best of all, it’s full of dog-friendly places, including Barkwells®, our editors’ pick for best stays. A true dog/human retreat, Barkwells offers fabulous, well-appointed cabins, each with a kitchen and fenced-in yard; the property itself is completely fenced as well. There are lots of opportunities for off-leash socializing, making new friends and taking a plunge in the large pond. There really is no place quite like this.” The Bark
I’ve lost track of how many times we have made the trip from Maine, must be over a dozen by now…This time my 95 yr old Mom came with us. On the way home she said, “In the 95 years of adventures God has granted me on this earth, seeing the joy on your dogs’ faces at Barkwells has to have been the most pleasurable of them all.”
For the elderly and/or mobility challenged, the cabins are VERY easy to navigate. All the details tended to, and the staff is hugely helpful and very respectful of space & distance during this weird covid thing…I strongly suggest making the trip from wherever you are, your dogs will thank you and who knows, it might just be the trip of a (super-long) lifetime!!

At the time of writing this there are 268 reviews with an average star rating of 5. I ask what can I say that hasn’t been said? This was my family’s first stay at Barkwells and certainly will not be the last. Great location, we visited Asheville and Hendersonville with equal ease. But enough about us, this place is Dog Heaven.
Barkwells is the easiest 5 star review I’ve written to date. Come, Sit, Stay. – Trip Advisor, October 2020
If you have a dog(s) or even if you don’t, you will not find a greater place for a relaxing vacation than Barkwells.
We will be back again and again. – Guest Book, June 2019
