Easter Fun For Your Pup - Spring Enrichment Games

Easter is just around the corner, and while the holiday baskets fill up with chocolate eggs and jelly beans, there are plenty of ways to include your pup in the seasonal fun.

Enrichment games are one of the best gifts you can give your dog. They provide mental stimulation, reduce boredom, and strengthen the bond between you. Here are some of our favorite Easter-themed enrichment activities to try with your dog this spring.

The Classic: Dog Easter Egg Hunt

This is the activity that never gets old. Hide treat-filled plastic eggs around your yard, meadow, or living room and let your dog sniff them out. It taps into your pup's natural scent-work instincts and is endlessly entertaining for the whole family.

A few important safety notes: use plastic eggs that are large enough that your dog cannot swallow them whole. If your dog is an aggressive chewer, skip the eggs entirely and simply scatter dog-safe treats across the grass. Always make sure to count your eggs before and after— you don't want any "mystery snacks" discovered days later. The AKC has a great overview of how to set up a safe canine egg hunt.

For high-value treats that make the nose work really exciting, try small pieces of chicken, freeze-dried liver, or any other extra-smelly favorite. The more enticing the scent, the more engaged your dog will be.

Level It Up: Scent Work Challenges

If your dog is already a pro at basic nose work, raise the difficulty level. Hide the eggs (or treats) in more discreet spots like behind a garden statue, tucked under a porch step, or nestled in low shrubs. The challenge should be stimulating without being frustrating. A good enrichment activity always ends with success and a reward.

You can also try using your dog's puzzle feeder toys or stuffed Kongs as the "Easter eggs." Fill them with peanut butter, cream cheese, or a lick mat-friendly filling and hide them around the space. Sidewalk Dog has a fun breakdown of Easter egg hunt difficulty levels—great inspiration for adapting the hunt to your dog's experience with nose work.

DIY Dog Easter Treats

Half the fun of a holiday is the kitchen creativity. Dog-safe Easter treat recipes are simple to make and let your pup feel included in the celebration. Some popular options include carrot and peanut butter biscuits, banana and oat cookies cut into egg or bunny shapes, and frozen yogurt "eggs" made in an ice cube tray.

Remember: no chocolate, no xylitol (found in sugar-free peanut butter), no grapes or raisins, and no macadamia nuts. Easter lilies are also highly toxic to dogs, so keep all floral arrangements well out of reach. The ASPCA's toxic plant list is a helpful reference to bookmark for the season.

Easter Agility in the Meadow

At Barkwells, our fenced meadows are perfect for a little impromptu Easter agility course. Set up simple "bunny hurdles" using garden canes or pool noodles, create a treat-hunt trail through the grass, or use the natural terrain for a spirited game of chase and fetch. Physical activity paired with mental enrichment makes for the best kind of tired dog.

For inspiration on setting up a simple backyard obstacle course, Daily Paws has a great beginner-friendly agility guide you can easily adapt with an Easter theme. You can find great inspiration for your Barkwells stay or your backyard at home.

The Photo Opportunity You Don't Want to Miss

Dress your pup in a pair of bunny ears (if they tolerate it!), find a patch of spring wildflowers, and capture the moment. Dogs tend to cooperate better for photos when they're slightly worn out from play, so run the egg hunt first, then reach for the camera.

Spring at Barkwells is genuinely beautiful, with the meadows greening up and the mountains coming alive. It's the perfect backdrop for your dog's Easter portrait. Tag us in your holiday photos—we love seeing the Barkwells pack in their seasonal best!

However you celebrate, remember to include your dog. From all of us at Barkwells, Happy Easter to you and your pack!
