Summer (June–August): Long Days and Mountain Cool
Summer is our busiest season, and for good reason. While the rest of the Southeast is sweltering, the elevation of the Blue Ridge Mountains built-in advantage: Asheville has a mild summer climate with average temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to the low 80s—a genuine escape for dogs and their people who are used to lowland heat. Early morning is the best time for longer hikes before afternoon temperatures rise and the occasional mountain thunderstorm rolls in.
Summer at Barkwells means long daylight hours, full days of swimming in the pond, and wildflowers in bloom on the trails. Explore Asheville's guide to summer hiking highlights how climbing even a little higher in elevation—like the trails just minutes from our property in Pisgah National Forest—delivers noticeably cooler air, shaded rhododendron tunnels, and mountain breezes that make mid-summer hiking genuinely comfortable. If you're coming in summer, book early as cabins fill up fast, especially around holidays and weekends.

Fall (September–November): The Magic Season
If there's a single season that makes people fall in love with Western North Carolina, it's autumn. What makes the area so special is that fall color here isn't a single event — it's a progression. Higher ridges along the Blue Ridge Parkway begin turning in mid-to-late September at elevations above 6,000 feet, while valleys and lower elevations closer to Asheville and Brevard often hold their color well into early November—giving visitors a much wider window than most realize.
For dogs, fall is one of the best seasons of all. Cooler temperatures mean longer, more comfortable hikes, and the trails are blanketed in fallen leaves that seem to bring out the puppy in every dog. September through early November sees temperatures hovering in the upper 50s to mid-70s—ideal for exploring. Just note that October is peak season: weekday stays tend to be quieter while still offering peak color, and booking early is the best way to secure your dates.
Winter (December–February): Cozy, Quiet, and Underrated
Winter at Barkwells is a hidden gem. The crowds thin out, rates are lower, and the mountain landscape takes on a quiet, peaceful beauty that's hard to describe until you've experienced it. Snow is possible (but not guaranteed at our elevation) and when it does arrive, watching your dog experience snow for the first time (or the tenth) never gets old.
The cabins are warm and well-equipped for winter stays, and the bare trees open up views you can't see any other time of year. If your dog loves to sniff and explore without the sensory overload of a busy trail, winter hiking offers that in abundance. It's also one of the most peaceful times to simply be. No agenda, no crowds, just you and your dog in the mountains.
Spring (March–May): Wildflowers and Fresh Starts
Spring is one of the most visually stunning times to visit the Blue Ridge. Pisgah National Forest alone is home to more than 1,600 blooming plant species, with the bloom season running from March all the way through June. Trilliums, flame azaleas, mountain laurels, and the spectacular pink and purple rhododendrons each take their turn, creating a rolling wave of color that moves up the mountains as temperatures warm. The Blue Ridge Parkway's rhododendron display is one of the most stunning seasonal events in the entire Southeast and it unfolds right in our backyard.
Spring can bring unpredictable weather—a warm Tuesday followed by a chilly Thursday is entirely normal—but that's part of the charm. Dogs tend to love the cool, damp air and the explosion of new smells that comes with every spring walk.
