Fifteen years ago, Michael and I followed our dream to the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina and discovered a sign on an old barn in a rural area near Asheville. The Barkwells “sign” launched our concept for a luxury retreat designed for people who want to vacation with their dogs. The iconic Asheville market was the perfect location and this fully fenced, 7 acres with one cabin and a pond was the perfect place to develop our vision.
We are celebrating our 15th season, flowers are blooming, winter projects are complete, cabins are spic and span from spring cleaning and we are excited to welcome returning and new guests to Barkwells!

Bringing your dog with you on vacation is an exciting prospect, and more than 10,000 dogs and their people have enjoyed a vacation with us over the last 15 years! While Barkwells has always encouraged the purchase of trip insurance in case life unexpectedly happens, dog-related illness or death have never been covered under standard trip insurance policies. (Note: There are a select few policies that provide cancellation coverage if your service animal becomes sick or injured.)
